The reader’s guide · A reading companion

Five original parts. Six English volumes.

Your guide to reading R. Kumar’s edition in order, from Volume 1 through Volume 5B.

The simplest route through R. Kumar’s English edition is also the intended one: Volume 1, Volume 2, Volume 3, Volume 4, Volume 5A, then Volume 5B.

Why five original parts become six volumes

Kalki’s original Ponniyin Selvan is arranged in five parts. In this English edition, the fifth part is presented in two volumes, 5A and 5B. That creates a six-volume collection while retaining the sequence of the complete story.

Volume 5B continues the fifth part. It is not an optional sequel or a separate story. If you are collecting the complete edition, include both 5A and 5B.

The six-volume sequence

  1. Volume 1New River Flow
  2. Volume 2The Cyclone
  3. Volume 3Killing Sword
  4. Volume 4The Crown
  5. Volume 5AApex of Sacrifice · First half
  6. Volume 5BApex of Sacrifice · Second half

The English titles above identify the volumes in this edition. Keep the numbers as your main guide when comparing different editions, whose English title wording may vary.

Digital Volumes and hardcover Parts

Our website uses “Volumes” for the Multimedia Digital Edition and “Parts” for the Premium Collector’s Hardcover Edition. Both follow the sequence 1, 2, 3, 4, 5A, 5B.

Choose the format that suits the way you read. The collection page contains the edition descriptions and current purchase options. A volume’s information page helps you explore that book; your purchased digital copy opens from My Library.

Where should a new reader start?

Begin with Volume 1, even if you already know some characters from the films or have heard the story discussed. Reading from the beginning lets relationships, motives and discoveries build in sequence.

If you are returning after a break, continue from the volume and chapter you last read. You can use the reader’s chapter index to orient yourself rather than jumping ahead to a later volume.
